  1. La ricostruzione tridimensionale del monumento, realizzata sulla base di testimonianze coeve (incisioni, dipinti, modelli preparatori e un frammento sopravvissuto della scultura);
  2. L’esatta collocazione del monumento nello spazio attuale della piazza, calcolata attraverso planimetrie e vedute urbane del tempo;

The magnificent machine. The equestrian statue of Francesco
III of Este comes back to life. Augmented reality for the history
of a lost Estense monument.

The project is part of the program for the Festival Filosofia 2020, that this year is inspired by the theme of “machines”. Through the technological “machine” of augmented reality it will be possible to discover another “machine”: the gigantic equestrian monument (more than 7 meters tall) representing Duke Francesco III, created in 1774 by the sculptor from Carrara, Giovanni Antonio Cybei for Sant’Agostino Square, and that was destroyed just over 20 years later during the revolutionary movements.
The initiative includes three phases, whereby history (of art and of urban planning) merges with digital technology to form an inseparable pair:

  1. The three-dimensional reconstruction of the monument, created on the basis of contemporary testimonies (engravings, paintings, preparatory models and a surviving fragment from the sculpture);
  2. The exact positioning of the monument in the current space of the square, calculated through town plans and urban views of the time;
  3. The creation of a specific app “DigiMo”, that, once installed, will allow the visitor to “virtually” visualize the mass of the sculpture and draw near to appreciate the decoration close by.

    The experience, complemented by a short audio guide, will therefore allow the visitor to rediscover the seventeenth century configuration of the square, when it used to be closed by the gates of Sant’Agostino. Demolished at the beginning of the twentieth century, the gates will be presented in a reconstruction similar to that of the equestrian monument.
